LG Electronics transformed its Changwon factory, a key production base for its home appliance business, into a smart autonomous factory, realizing the automated production of refrigerators and water purifiers.

On September 16, LG Electronics held the completion ceremony of the first phase of the production automation project at the LG Smart Park in Changwon, Gyeongsangnam-do. LG Smart Park is the new name of the Changwon Plant. It was selected through a naming contest among employees.

LG Electronics will invest a total of 800 billion won to transform the Changwon No. 1 factory, which produces kitchen appliances, into an environmentally friendly smart factory. Of the total cost, it invested 480 billion won to complete the first phase of the integrated production building.

LG Electronics integrated the production lines previously dispersed in various buildings into one production building, and started producing three production lines including refrigerators and water purifier production lines.

The new integrated production building has significantly increased the automation rate of LG Electronics' entire kitchen appliance production process. By introducing a comprehensive monitoring system based on production big data, the company has also improved production efficiency and quality competitiveness. The company established a quality prediction system through deep learning to realize the digital transformation of the home appliance production process.

The logistics system has also been improved to increase productivity. LG Electronics has expanded the automation of parts logistics by introducing a large number of new technologies such as intelligent unmanned warehouses and overhead conveyors by introducing an automatic supply system based on three-dimensional logistics. LG Uplus 5G network-based logistics robots automatically transport materials required for home appliance production through seamless and stable communication connections in the factory.

In 2024, when the Changwon Autonomous Smart Factory, the latest facility with 6 production lines in two buildings with a total construction area of 336,000 square meters, is finally completed, the annual production capacity of the Changwon Factory will increase to 3 to 2 million units. Will be able to greatly improve its global competitiveness. It also simplifies the manufacturing process through production facilities optimized for modular design. This process greatly saves LG Electronics' development time and cost.

After the new integrated production building is completed, through the application of advanced energy facilities and technologies, such as the building energy management solution "Beacon", the energy efficiency of products used for production will also increase by 30%. Starting from LG Smart Park, LG Electronics plans to expand the construction of smart autonomous factories in its global production bases.
