Milwaukee Department of Health Coronavirus COVID-19 update. If you need help, find COVID resources online or call the MHD COVID hotline.

In Milwaukee, our drinking water is treated to reduce the risk of lead entering our drinking water, but some old houses still have water pipes, called lead service lines, that lead water into their homes, or lead pipes in their homes. The Milwaukee Department of Health recommends that families with children under 6 years of age living in homes with lead pipe service lines, pregnant women, women who may become pregnant, and women breastfeeding at home take additional measures to further reduce the risk of lead exposure, including the use of certified Drinking water filter to remove lead. This is especially important for babies who drink formula milk made from tap water.

To find out if your home has a lead service hotline, you can find your address on the Milwaukee Water Works page, or call the Milwaukee Water Works Customer Service Department at (414) 286-2830. For more information on what you can do to reduce the risk of lead exposure through drinking water, please visit our drinking water safety page.

Domestic drinking water filtration systems can reduce or eliminate lead. Be sure to look for products that are NSF/ANSI certified according to Standard 53 to remove lead. Always follow the manufacturer's guidelines for product installation and maintenance. Find products that are certified to remove lead by NSF International or the Water Quality Association, or download a sample list here (open PDF).

Drinking water filters that are certified to remove lead (look for NSF/ANSI Standard 53) are widely available in hardware and household goods stores and online retailers.

If you meet any of the following eligibility criteria, the Milwaukee Department of Health will provide a free drinking water filter starter kit:

The drinking water filter is included in the free lead safety kit, available at our location on the 1st floor of 841 N Broadway and our community partners, by appointment only. Call the Milwaukee Family Environmental Health Customer Service Hotline (414) 286-2165 to make an appointment for the lead safety kit.

All recipients of drinking water filters will be required to complete a drinking water filter questionnaire.
