If you have installed RO at home or plan to install RO, then this story must be very important to you. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has ordered the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to issue instructions to RO manufacturers not to install water purifiers in places with low TDS.

Low TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) refers to places where minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and zinc are deficient or extremely low. Total dissolved solids is the concentration of dissolved particles or solids in water. TDS contains inorganic salts, such as calcium, magnesium, chloride, sulfate, bicarbonate, etc., as well as more inorganic compounds that are easily soluble in water.

NGT has instructed the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to issue instructions to all RO manufacturers to prohibit the installation of water purifiers with a total dissolved solids (TDS) level below 500 mg/L. The bench composed of NGT Chairman Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel, Justice Sudhir Agarwal and expert member Dr. Nagin Nanda also asked CPCB to issue management instructions on RO non-conforming products (including ink cartridges).

The judge said: “In order to comply with the Supreme Court’s order, we instruct CPCB to issue appropriate orders to all manufacturers in accordance with Article 5 of the Environmental Protection Act of 1986 and refer to the court’s order so that it can be implemented within one month.”

The arbitration tribunal stated that the "Regulations on the Use of Water Treatment Systems" issued by the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate cannot be said to be in compliance with its order.

The judge said in his Dec. 1 order: “This notice is about the amendment of the 115th Schedule I of the Environmental (Protection) Regulations of 1986 so that all users of DWPS and other DWPS should comply with it. The guidelines are issued by the Communist Party of China."

50-250 ppm means low TDS-lack of minerals such as calcium, magnesium and zinc.

300-500 ppm is ideal-this level is the best value for TDS in drinking water. The water probably contains minerals and does not taste weak.

600-900 ppm means not so good-consider using a reverse osmosis system to filter TDS.
